UNIVERSAL POWDER COATINGS

Coating Applications

Thermoset powders are widely used because of their finish quality and physical properties. When subjected to elevated temperatures, thermoset powder coatings melt, flow and chemically cross-link within themselves to form a reaction product with a higher molecular weight. the cross-linked coating has a different chemical structure than the basic resin. These newly formed materials are heat stable and will not soften or flow on further exposure to heat. The table below outlines the general properties of these thermoset powders and their typical applications.

Typical Applications

Powder Type General Properties Typical Applications
Functional Epoxy Produces excellent corrosion protection...Good electrical insulation properties Automobile alternators, electric motors, and switch gear. Coats gas oil field distribution piping and reinforces steel bars for highway and bridge decks against corrosion
Thin Film Epoxy Produces highly attractive coatings of various gloss or surface textures while retaining toughness, corrosion resistance, flexibility and adhesion characteristics...Color chalks upon exposure to ultraviolet light (sunlight) Fire extinguishers, toys, hospital equipment, business machines, bathroom fixtures, garden tools, and kitchen furniture
Urethane Polyester Outstanding thin film appearance...Excellent flexibility...Very good weathering properties and toughness...Very good mechanical properties...Good chemical and impact resistance Appliance and general metal finishing areas including office furniture, lawn and garden equipment, boat trailers and garden tractors. Automotive wheels and trim, playground equipment and flourescent light fixtures
Polyester TGIC Film thickness of 3 to 5 mils offer excellent flow, gloss and toughness...Excellent mechanical properties at high thickness...Excellent weathering properties...Good chemical and impact resistance...Good edge coverage Coating used where a combination of good edge coverage with good exterior durability is required, such as air conditioner cabinets, outdoor furniture, and wire fencing. Also used to clear coat aluminum wheels
Acrylic Excellent exterior color/gloss retention...Excellent thin film appearance...Very good chemical resistance...Fair mechanical properties Originally used in the appliance industry to coat range side panels, refrigerator cabinets, washing machine parts, dishwasher exteriors, microwave ovens, Also utilized for automotive trim parts and aluminum extrusions
Epoxy/Polyester Hybrid Very good chemical and corrosion resistance...Very good mechanical properties... Poor exterior color/gloss retention Water heaters, radiators, transformer covers, office furniture, power tools, and shelving
